What private, liberal arts colleges have an exceptional arts program?
Q. I'm majoring in Studio Arts and possibly French or International Relations. My current school is strong in the liberal arts but their visual arts program is underdeveloped and pretty elementary, so I want to transfer. I feel like I rarely hear about good arts programs at small, private colleges so I'm looking for some suggestions, primarily in the Pacific Northwest but I'm open to anything. Thanks.

A. The small, liberal arts schools that I know have excellent overall academics and strong visual arts programs are on the east coast, sorry. They include: Bard, Skidmore, Tufts (via their relationship with the School of the MFA Boston), Brown (via their relationship with RISD; and like Tufts, maybe big for you, but they really are small unis, relatively speaking), and Carnegie Mellon U (again, a small uni). Those are all very strong. The one I think is dead-on for what you want is Bard. Others you could consider include Smith, Hampshire, Wesleyan, and SUNY New Palz.

What is the future of arts education in secondary schools?
Q. I want to teach art in secondary schools, but I have heard a lot about how the NCLB has cut it out of middle and elementary schools and cut back significantly in high school. This is depressing to hear as i really want to be an art teacher, preferably high school. With Obama as president, are their going to be any changes with arts education? Or is one day, the arts going to be cut out of secondary schools forever?
Asked by . - Mon Jan 26 10:12:56 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, that part of education is being greatly cut. Students who are artistically inclined, like myself, are being completely denied. As for President Obama, he's not by himself, and there are other things that he has put on his agenda BEFORE education - econ., war, etc. So you'll just need patience. in the meantime, I suggest you teach at a democratic school or Sudbury Valley model school. You are free to teach whatever you wish to eager and willing students.

Q. What activities and events would children between the ages of 1-11 like? What type of club would they like to join? Drama, arts etc? How much do you think is a reasonable price to pay for such a club for perhaps 2 hrs at the weekend or in the evening. As a parent what would you like to see in a childrens club and what would you be looking for in deciding if your child(ren) will attend? In a nutshell describe your perfect kids club. Thanks, F.

A. Hello, i am in mixed martial arts. I have done Tae kwon do, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu jitsu. and Wrestling what you should do is depending on the martial arts. but you should work on conditioning most. What i do is monday and tuesday, work outs. curls, push ups. military presses, sit ups, pull ups. and ab work outs. On wednesday i do straight conditioning. always stretch before. Thursday and friday, i work on my leg muscles. squatting and stretching and leg pressing. But if you are a begenniner, i suggest you take one day breaks. and remember, muscle and cardio builds while you are sleeping. so get a lot of rest! Good luck!

What's the difference between culinary arts and baking?
Q. I really like making cakes and things, and I want a future that involves that. I looked at some University things and was wondering what the difference between baking and culinary arts is, like, isn't culinary arts just food in general? And which one is more successful in the world? Do bakers get paid more than cooks? And is there a chance to travel?
Asked by Jen - Sun Nov 9 19:57:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. basically culinary arts involves cooking, not baking. you should take a pastry course if you want to learn more about cake making, and baking in general. as for salary, it kind of depends on how good you are and where you live, and the travel opportunities...that's kind of up to you

How do liberal arts colleges compare with regular colleges?
Q. Would going to a liberal arts college make it difficult to get a job that would be easier to get if I had gone to a regular college in America? Do liberal arts schools have better education in humanities? How do I decide if I should go to a liberal arts college?
Asked by When We Find God... - Sun Apr 5 00:17:39 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not sure what you mean. Most colleges in the US offer liberal arts degrees (That is a Bachelor of Arts) A in one of the liberal arts - history, languages, literature, the arts etc.) and a BS (Bachelor of Science) if you major in one of the sciences. Some award only BAs no matter what you major in. So I'm not sure what you mean by a "regular" college. You can (or at least you used to be able to) do a "liberal arts" degree at MIT! There are colleges that are stronger in certain areas of the humanities or sciences. I would think that the reputation of the college in your field would matter most. Could you be more specific about your concerns? Are there specific colleges that you are wondering about? What do you think that you might major… [cont.]

How often do you have presentations in liberal arts colleges?
Q. i am going to a top 25 liberal arts college and i was wondering if there is a lot of presentations you have to do. Do you have to read your papers out loud to the class? How active do you have to be in class discussions in liberal arts colleges?
Asked by unknown - Fri Aug 28 00:52:08 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That completely depends on the professor, not the type of school. I do a lot more presentations at my university than I did at my liberal arts college - in 4 years there, I did one for an anthropology class (summarizing my paper), one for a physics class (here's a cool effect) and one to defend my honors thesis. Whether or not you have to participate in discussions completely depends on the type of class. Some encourage that, others actively discourage discussion during class.

A. There are already some excellent answers to this question so I'll just ask one? If you wanted to learn to play the piano, would you go to a grade one piano player for your instruction? No? Well, why would you go to an untrained martial artist for your martial arts instruction? It is traditional, when someone sets themself up in a town as a martial arts instructor, for that person to be willing to take on the students of other similar martial arts who might challenge him to "give them a lesson". If you are willing to go through that and believe you are able to come through intact, go ahead!

I am leaning towards taekwondo only because this is the closest training facility to my home. I am only interested in training and fitness and not interested at all in competitions or exhibitions. Difference between a bachelor of arts degree and a bachelor of science degree?
Q. I am considering a Graphic Design degree, currently shopping 2 private schools. One offers a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, the other offers a Bachelors of Science in Graphic Design. What's the difference?
Asked by Jodi F - Wed Mar 25 14:37:53 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Many people think one is "better" than the other or that it's all about the subject you study or etc... They're wrong. It's really not all that complicated. A Bachelor of Arts is an academic degree that requires nearly all of the coursework be completed in the liberal arts fields. The major is almost always a liberal arts field of study. (math and physics are, for example, liberal arts as are English, history, sociology, etc...) A Bachelor of Fine Arts is not a Bachelor of Arts. A Bachelor of Science is an academic degree that requires about half of the coursework be completed in the liberal arts and that the other half be either in the liberal arts or applied sciences. (engineering, business, education, etc... are applied sciences)… [cont.]
