From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in performance. The term comes from a Greek word meaning "action" (Classical Greek: δράμα, dráma), which is derived from "to do" (Classical Greek: δράω, dráō). The enactment of drama in theatre, performed by actors on a stage before an audience, presupposes collaborative modes of production and a collective form of reception. The structure of dramatic texts, unlike other forms of literature, is directly influenced by this collaborative production and collective reception. The early modern tragedy Hamlet (1601) by Shakespeare and the classical Athenian tragedy Oedipus the King (c. 429 BCE) by Sophocles are among the supreme masterpieces of the art of drama. The two masks associated with drama represent the traditional generic division between comedy and tragedy. They are symbols of the ancient Greek Muses, Thalia and Melpomene. Thalia was the Muse of comedy (the laughing face), while Melpomene was the Muse of tragedy (the weeping face). Considered as a genre of poetry in general, the dramatic mode has been contrasted with the epic and the lyrical modes ever since Aristotle's Poetics (c. 335 BCE)—the earliest work of dramatic theory. The use of "drama" in the narrow sense to designate a specific type of play dates from the 19th century. Drama in this sense refers to a play that is neither a comedy nor a tragedy--for example, Zola's Thérèse Raquin (1873) or Chekhov's Ivanov (1887). It is this narrow sense that the film and television industry and film studies adopted to describe "drama" as a genre within their respective media. "Radio drama" has been used in both senses--originally transmitted in a live performance, it has also been used to describe the more high-brow and serious end of the dramatic output of radio. Drama is often combined with music and dance: the drama in opera is sung throughout; musicals include spoken dialogue and songs; and some forms of drama have regular musical accompaniment (melodrama and Japanese Nō, for example). In certain periods of history (the ancient Roman and modern Romantic) dramas have been written to be read rather than performed. In improvisation, the drama does not pre-exist the moment of performance; performers devise a dramatic script spontaneously before an audience. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What drama effects can I use to show the themes of revenge, supernatural and betrayal? Q. I have to conduct a piece of drama based around the myth of Oiwa (most famous Japanese myth). I need to take ideas from this and develop to fit my production. Currently I am using: strobe lighting, a Powerpoint in the background with an image of a ghost; lighting to show the mood i.e. colours. Thanks for all the help. So far I can think of costumes? Props? Other effects? Asked by Neo - Mon May 14 12:31:24 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Don't forget the fog machine. If you get a really good one you can set up a wall of smoke and project the PowerPoint slides onto that, and that's a pretty creepy effect. If you can lay your hands on some dancers or gymnasts, you can use them to set mood. Have them assume some strange and graceful postures. Use them like self-mobile set pieces. Dress 'em all in black and have the actors with speaking parts ignore them. Scrims are also good. Stretch large sheets of sheer fabric. When things behind them are lit, you can see through them; when they're dark, the scrim appears to be opaque. Or you can get heavier-weight scrims and project shadows onto them from behind. Large swathes of cloth are also nice for producing effects. Red is… [cont.] Answered by jfengel - Mon May 14 17:01:13 2007 What is the best detective or adventure Korean or Japanese drama? Q. Q. why am i dragged into everyones problems and am a convenient ''out'' for people with insecurities? I just want to live in peace, how do you forget about people who try to impact you negatively and why do you think im a drama magnet? Asked by . - Sat Dec 1 21:54:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. No one can drag you unwillingly into their problems. To some degree, you are volunteering to participate, even though you dislike it. The way out of this is to set limits with people, even if it angers them and they try desperately to suck you in. If you consistently set limits on what you will and will not get involved in, they will learn not to mess around with you. It's kind of a conditioning you have to do.
