The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. Its name is derived from the Latin name Tepre Pacificum, "peaceful sea", bestowed upon it by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It extends from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, bounded by Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east. At 169.2 million square kilometres (65.3 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean – and, in turn, the hydrosphere – covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about 30% of its total surface. The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the Pacific and in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,800 ft). The Pacific Ocean. From Wikipedia under the

Q. On transpacific flights, like from New York to Tokyo, why do planes always fly over Alaska and Russia>>??? It's way longer than to just fly over the Pacific Ocean! I don't get it! Asked by skilletbiscuit xx - Mon Mar 17 12:25:07 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's not just the curvature of the Earth, it's also aviation laws. Planes have to be within 200 miles of land in the event of an emergency requiring them to land somewhere. The airport in Thule, Greenland, is a place all planes from Europe to the US west coast must fly near, as it's got a long runway. The same for flying over Alaska - Anchorage receives the distressed flights - the over the Aleutians - Adak and Attu have long runways - just in case. Many a plane has landed at these airports.
